چکیده

We report experimental and three-dimensional discrete dislocation dynamics measurements to characterize the effect of high starting dislocation density on size-affected flow. Microcrystals were focused ion beam milled into a pre-strained bulk Ni single crystal to obtain a dense heterogeneous dislocation cell structure. The strength-scaling exponent is shown to decreases considerably with increasing dislocation density. Cutting the pre-existing forest during microcrystal fabrication can lead to alternate pathways for the advancing slipped areas to defeat the forest, resulting in a lower strength than the pre-strained bulk crystal. 2012 Acta Materialia Inc. Scaling Laws in the Ductile Fracture of Metallic Crystals

We explore whether the continuum scaling behavior of the fracture energy of metals extends down to the atomistic level. We use an embedded atom method (EAM) model of Ni, thus bypassing the need to model strain-gradient plasticity at the continuum level. The calculations are performed with a number of different 3D periodic size cells using standard molecular dynamics (MD) techniques. A void nucl...

Experimental Study on the Magnetomechanical Characteristics of Ni-Mn-Ga Ferromagnetic Shape Memory Alloy Single Crystals

Magnetic shape memory properties of Ni-Mn-Ga single crystals were characterized by measurement of stress-induced martensite reorientation under constant magnetic fields. Also magnetic field-induced strain as a function of the applied magnetic field under different constant compressive stress levels has been investigated. All the experiments were performed at room temperature in which the sample...

Statistics of dislocation slip avalanches in nanosized single crystals show tuned critical behavior predicted by a simple mean field model.

We show that slowly sheared metallic nanocrystals deform via discrete strain bursts (slips), whose size distributions follow power laws with stress-dependent cutoffs. We show for the first time that plasticity reflects tuned criticality, by collapsing the stress-dependent slip-size distributions onto a predicted scaling function. Both power-law exponents and scaling function agree with mean-fie...

Size Dependent Nonlinear Bending Analysis of a Flexoelectric Functionally Graded Nano-Plate Under Thermo-Electro-Mechanical Loads

The effects of flexoelectricity on thermo-electro-mechanical behavior of a functionally graded electro-piezo-flexoelectric nano-plate are investigated in this paper using flexoelectric modified and the Kirchhoff classic theories. Moreover, using the variation method and the principle of minimum potential energy for the first time, the coupled governing nonlinear differential equations of the na...

Vibration Analysis of FG Micro-Beam Based on the Third Order Shear Deformation and Modified Couple Stress Theories

In this paper, free vibration analysis and forced vibration analysis of FG doubly clamped micro-beams is studied based on the third order shear deformation and modified couple stress theories. The size dependent dynamic equilibrium equations and both the classical and non-classical boundary conditions are derived using a variational approach. It is assumed that all properties of the FG micro-be...
